From the Highest Peaks of Midgaard Where the Sons of Men Do Hold, To the Killing Chill of Niflheim The Land of Ice and Cold. To the Furnace Blast of Muspelheim Where Flame Leaps Far and Nigh, Nothing Born of Yggdrasil Escapes the Ravens Eye.

Today I am interviewing the artist behind Idis Örlög. An Idis is a spirit of a Nordic Ancestor – a guide and protector of destiny. Idis Örlög is a musical journey to roots, a medium through which ancestral spirits communicate, sharing their wisdom through the spontaneity of song.

So Idis Örlög began with a strike of inspiration. I realized our pagan ancestors have a lot to tell us, a lot we can learn from and this remains unknown due to Christianity’s hold over Europe, and following “re-writing” of history. The idises are female guardian spirits who watch over their kin, their descendants. It is said they can intervene in the lives of their descendants in a positive way, to defend or guide them. Symphony No. 9 (Beethoven)

The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, is the final complete symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827). Completed in 1824, the symphony is one of the best-known works of the Western classical repertoire. Among critics, it is almost universally considered to be among Beethoven’s greatest works, and is considered by some to be the greatest piece of music ever written. It has been adapted for use as the European Anthem.

The symphony was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony (thus making it a choral symphony). The words are sung during the final movement by four vocal soloists and a chorus. They were taken from the “Ode to Joy”, a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with additions made by the composer.

The Death of Ludwig van Beethoven

The death of Ludwig van Beethoven on 26 March 1827 followed a prolonged illness. It was witnessed by his sister-in-law and by his close friend Anselm Hüttenbrenner, who provided a vivid description of the event. Beethoven’s funeral was held three days later, and the procession was witnessed by a large crowd. He was buried in the cemetery at Währing, although his remains were moved in 1888 to Vienna’s Zentralfriedhof.

Hüttenbrenner’s account has been used to ascribe motivations of resistance and anger to Beethoven in his final moments. Beethoven’s last words, and the exact cause of Beethoven’s death have also been the subject of some disagreement.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791), was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era.

Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but grew restless and travelled in search of a better position, always composing abundantly. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze and two sons.

Need some music to sword fight and pillage to? Check out my Amon Amarth favorite. Yes, yes I know this song came out back in 2008, but I love it so much that I decided it must be spread on the internet like a 13th century plague. Okay! Bad example! But I digress. The Twilight of the Thunder Gods album as a whole stood out to me more than the other Amon Amarth albums. As vikings they upgraded from raiding monastaries, to pillaging the Vatican and burning the pope’s underwear. Okay, bad example again!

Yet there is definitely something different about this album. Could it be that they got the guitarist Roope Latvala from Children of Bodom to play a solo track on this song? Could it be that they got the Cello metal folks from Apocalyptica and the vocalist, Lars Petrov…

“Before the thirteenth century,” Marisa Galvez writes in Songbook: How Lyrics Became Poetry in Medieval Europe (U of Chicago Press), “the terms ‘poem,’ ‘poet,’ and ‘poetry,’ were reserved for classical authors.” Medieval vernacular versifiers called themselves trobadors, skilled in trobar or chantar. In relating their history, Galvez juxtaposes works such as the thirteenth-century Middle Latin / German / French / Provençal Carmina Burana, which criticized the Catholic Church, with the fourteenth-century Castilian Libro de buen amor, which delineated the joys and perils of carnality, and she interleaves pages from comedic and terpsichorean chansonniers with the comparatively dignified longings of the Liederhandschriften of the German minnesingers. Do you and your warrior buddies need a jolly drinking song to bonk heads to in the woods? Check out this Korpiklaani classic.  They are a Finnish Folk Metal Band that writes songs about mythical stories, nature and of course drinking – that is, when they are not wrastlin in the woods. Korpiklaani itself is Finnish for “clan of warriors.” They look like they had a lot of fun in the making of this video; especially the guy on the left banging the drum with a stick. So take a swig of the nearest mead or grog you can find and party in the woods like you just don’t care. If this isn’t what being a Pagan Warrior is about, I don’t know what is.

Amber Asylum – Live In Wroclaw

Amber Asylum has been active since the mid 1990s with the consistent member being the multi instrumentalist and vocalist Kris Force. Force has collaborated with a number of artists including Jarboe and Lung Leg over the years. There have been six previous Amber Asylum albums, an ep, two singles and this beautifully presented live album, recorded 11/11/11/ at the Wroclaw Industrial Festival. It features two new tracks; Perfect Calm and Your Executioner and a cover of the 1999 Candlemass track Tot. The line up for this recording was Kris Force, Leila Abdul- Rauf (Memento Mori, Bastard Noise) and Sarah Rosalena Brady.

Things open up with Perfect Calm, sounds work slowly with a slow guitar, viola and Ethereal Vocal style. There is an immediate air of Twin Peaks that surrounds the track which is at once fragile and powerful. Considering the interest that seems to have been generated by my last article on Russia’s revered neofolk duo Ritual Front, it seemed like the ideal time to tackle one of dark folk’s other extremely talented East European artists in Moon Far Away. Though they exist in a completely different style of neofolk than Ritual Front and have much in common with the worlds of experimental, ambient, electronic and dark pop music, Moon Far Away has been largely celebrated amongst primarily neofolk and neoclassical audiences during their nearly two decade-long career.  Undoubtedly, they have come to be known as one of Russia’s most beloved folk projects within their own country in the past decade, and have become an exceptional aural diplomat to the Western World for East European neofolk in that time as well though it seems that they’ve let their music do most of the talking rather than speaking on…
